Ways to help, gently
- Look after yourself too. Supporting someone is demanding. Seek your own support and set boundaries that protect your wellbeing.
- Use kind, non-judgmental language. Try to avoid comments about weight, appearance, or what someone is eating, and lead with care rather than fear.
- Expect ups and downs. Setbacks are part of recovery, not a sign of failure or of your loved one letting you down.
- Know that families are not to blame, and can be one of the most important allies in recovery.
- Stay connected with their care team where that is welcome, and keep offering compassionate support if they find treatment hard.
